David Heinemeier Hansson, creator of the Ruby on Rails web framework, announced a significant expansion of funding for the Omacom Foundation, which was established at the end of August to support the development of the Omarchy Linux distribution. In just two weeks since the organization's creation, various companies and individuals have contributed nearly $7 million to the fund, in addition to the initial investment of $8 million. The total budget for the organization reached $14.95 million.
Brian Armstrong, CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, along with Yunjie Dai, creator of the Chinese game delivery platform TapTap, Drew Houston, founder of Dropbox, and Peter Steinberger, founder of OpenClaw, each donated $1 million to the project.
Funding for Omacom Linux also included contributions from 1Password and 37signals, each of which committed to donating $100,000 annually for the next three years. Notable contributions of $100,000 and more came from the co-founder of PingCAP, the founder of Metaco, and the product director of Notion.
Meta Superintelligence provided the project with tokens for the use of AI tools worth $1.5 million. Companies Anthropic, OpenAI, and Fireworks each contributed tokens equivalent to $150,000.
Meanwhile, the Omacom Foundation announced financial support for the open projects Hyprland, Quickshell, and mise, which are used in the Omarchy distribution. Krzysztof Wilczyński has been hired to work full-time on the Linux kernel package for Omacom, overseeing the subsystems related to the PCI bus in the Linux kernel.
Additionally, it was reported that within 18 days after the release, the installer ISO image of Omarchy 4.0 was downloaded over 200,000 times. According to weekly statistics from the 1Password project, the Omarchy distribution ranked second among Linux distributions used by 1Password users, just behind Fedora.
