Ariadne Conill, creator of the Audacious music player, initiator of the IRCv3 protocol development, and leader of the Alpine Linux security team, has released the initial implementation of the Wayback layer, allowing desktop environments tied to the X11 protocol to run using components based on Wayland. The project code is written in C and is distributed under the MIT license (the code file states public domain — CC0).
The project provides a Wayland composite server, limited to launching a fullscreen X11 session using Xwayland. Wayback is being developed to facilitate the transition away from supplying the classic X.org Server in the Alpine distribution. It is expected that leaving only the components needed for Wayland and Xwayland in the distribution will reduce the maintenance costs for X11 applications in Alpine.
Wayback uses the wlroots library from the Sway project, which implements the basic primitives for building composite servere on top of Wayland. The Wayback code is based on tinywl, a reference composite server from the wlroots developers, whose functionality has been trimmed down to the minimum necessary for stand-alone Xwayland operation.
