Salvatore Sanfilippo, creator of the Redis DBMS, , has announced that he will no longer be involved in the project's maintenance and will devote his time to something else. According to Salvatore, in recent years his work has been mostly focused on addressing external suggestions for improving and modifying the code, which is not what he wanted to do, as he prefers writing code and creating something new over handling routine maintenance tasks.
Salvatore will remain part of the Redis Labs advisory board, but will limit his role to generating ideas. Development and maintenance are being handed over to the community. The project manager position has been taken over by Yossi Gottlieb and Oran Agra, who have assisted Salvatore in recent years, understand his vision for the project, care about preserving the spirit of the Redis community, and are well-versed in the code and inner workings of Redis. Nevertheless, Salvatore's departure is a significant upheaval for the community, as he
had total control over all development issues and essentially played the role of "", through whom all commits and merge requests were processed, who decided how bugs would be fixed, what innovations should be added, and which architectural changes were acceptable.
The question of defining the future development model and interaction with the community has been proposed to be worked out by the new maintainers, who already have a new management structure that will involve the community. The new project structure implies an expansion of teamwork, which will allow for scaling development and maintenance processes. The plan is to make the project open and welcoming for community members, making it easier for them to take a more active and significant part in the development.
