Simon Peter, creator of the self-sufficient AppImage package format, has released version 0.6 of the helloSystem distribution, based on FreeBSD 12.2 and marketed as a system for regular users, particularly those on macOS dissatisfied with Apple's policies. The system avoids the complications typical of modern Linux distributions, is fully user-controlled, and provides a comfortable experience for former macOS users. A bootable image for the distribution has been created, sized at 1.4 GB (torrent).
Interfața seamănă cu macOS și include două panouri — unul superior cu meniul global și unul inferior cu bara de aplicații. Meniul global și bara de stare sunt realizate cu ajutorul pachetului panda-statusbar, dezvoltat de distribuția CyberOS (fost PandaOS). Bara de aplicații Dock este bazată pe realizările proiectului cyber-dock, de asemenea de la dezvoltatorii CyberOS. Pentru gestionarea fișierelor și plasarea icoanelor pe desktop, se dezvoltă managerul de fișiere Filer, bazat pe pcmanfm-qt de la proiectul LXQt. Ca browser implicit este oferit Falkon, dar este disponibil și Chromium ca opțiune.
Ca sistem de fișiere principal se folosește ZFS, iar pentru montare sunt suportate exFAT, NTFS, EXT4, HFS+, XFS și MTP. Aplicațiile sunt furnizate în pachete autonome. Pentru lansarea aplicațiilor se utilizează utilitarul launch, care găsește programul și analizează erorile în execuție. Sistemul pentru construirea imaginilor Live se bazează pe uneltele proiectului FuryBSD.
Proiectul dezvoltă o serie de aplicații proprii, cum ar fi un configurator, un instalator, utilitarul mountarchive pentru montarea arhivelor în arborele de sistem de fișiere, un utilitar pentru recuperarea datelor din ZFS, o interfață pentru partiționarea discurilor, un indicator pentru configurarea rețelei, un utilitar pentru capturi de ecran, un browser de servere Zeroconf, un indicator pentru configurarea volumului, un utilitar pentru configurarea mediului de boot. Pentru dezvoltare se folosește limbajul Python și biblioteca Qt. Printre componentele suportate pentru dezvoltarea aplicațiilor, în ordinea preferinței, se numără PyQt, QML, Qt, KDE Frameworks și GTK.
