Aceasta este a doua versiune \u00een cadrul proiectului GNU \u0219i este \u00een prezent clasificat\u0103 ca &#171;testing&#187;, deoarece necesit\u0103 stabilizare \u0219i testare suplimentar\u0103. Libreboot dezvolt\u0103 o ramur\u0103 complet liber\u0103 a proiectului CoreBoot, oferind o alternativ\u0103 cur\u0103\u021bat\u0103 de inser\u021bii binare pentru firmware-urile proprietare UEFI \u0219i BIOS, care sunt responsabile pentru ini\u021bializarea CPU-ului, memoriei, dispozitivelor periferice \u0219i altor componente hardware.    <\/p>\n<p>Libreboot are ca scop formarea unui mediu sistemic care s\u0103 permit\u0103 utilizarea exclusiv\u0103 a software-ului liber, nu doar la nivelul sistemului de operare, ci \u0219i al firmware-ului care asigur\u0103 bootarea. Libreboot nu face doar cur\u0103\u021barea CoreBoot de componentele ne-liberale, ci \u0219i completeaz\u0103 acesta cu instrumente pentru a simplifica utilizarea de c\u0103tre utilizatori finali, cre\u00e2nd o distribu\u021bie care poate fi folosit\u0103 de orice utilizator f\u0103r\u0103 abilit\u0103\u021bi speciale.     <\/p>\n<p>Dintre dispozitivele deja bine testate, pe care Libreboot le poate utiliza f\u0103r\u0103 probleme, se remarc\u0103 laptopurile bazate pe cipurile Intel GM45 (ThinkPad X200, T400), platforma X4X (Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L), ASUS KCMA-D8, ASUS KGPE-D16 \u0219i Intel i945 (ThinkPad X60\/T60, Macbook 1\/2).
