Un nou sistem de operare Essence, disponibil pentru testare ini\u021bial\u0103, vine cu propriul nucleu \u0219i interfa\u021b\u0103 grafic\u0103 pentru utilizatori. Proiectul este dezvoltat de un entuziast din 2017, creat de la zero \u0219i se remarc\u0103 printr-o abordare unic\u0103 \u00een construirea desktop-ului \u0219i a stivei grafice. Cea mai notabil\u0103 caracteristic\u0103 este capacitatea de a \u00eemp\u0103r\u021bi feroneri \u00een taburi, permi\u021b\u00e2nd astfel func\u021bionarea mai multor programe \u00eentr-o singur\u0103 fereastr\u0103 \u0219i gruparea aplica\u021biilor \u00een func\u021bie de sarcinile desf\u0103\u0219urate. Codul proiectului este scris \u00een C++ \u0219i este distribuit sub licen\u021ba MIT.

Managerul de feronere func\u021bioneaz\u0103 la nivelul nucleului sistemului de operare, iar interfa\u021ba este creat\u0103 prin intermediul unei biblioteci grafice proprii \u0219i a unui motor grafic vectorial care suport\u0103 efecte animate complexe. Interfa\u021ba este complet vectorial\u0103 \u0219i se scaleaz\u0103 automat pentru orice rezolu\u021bie de ecran. Toate informa\u021biile despre stiluri sunt stocate \u00een fi\u0219iere separate, ceea ce permite schimbarea u\u0219oar\u0103 a aspectului aplica\u021biilor. Pentru randarea programatic\u0103 se folose\u0219te cod din Mesa cu OpenGL. Se suport\u0103 lucrul cu mai multe limbi, iar pentru randarea fonturilor sunt utilizate FreeType \u0219i Harfbuzz.

Nucleul include un programator de sarcini cu suport pentru mai multe niveluri de prioritate, un subsistem de gestionare a memoriei cu suport pentru memorie partajat\u0103, mmap \u0219i un procesator de pagini de memorie multithread, un stiv\u0103 de re\u021bea (TCP\/IP), un subsistem audio pentru mixarea sunetelor, VFS \u0219i un sistem de fi\u0219iere EssenceFS cu un strat separat pentru caching-ul datelor. Pe l\u00e2ng\u0103 propriul sistem de fi\u0219iere sunt disponibile drivere pentru Ext2, FAT, NTFS \u0219i ISO9660. Se suport\u0103 externalizarea func\u021bionalit\u0103\u021bii \u00een module, cu posibilitatea de a le \u00eenc\u0103rca la nevoie. Driverele sunt preg\u0103tite pentru ACPI cu ACPICA, IDE, AHCI, NVMe, BGA, SVGA, HD Audio, Ethernet 8254x \u0219i USB XHCI (dispozitive de stocare \u0219i HID). <\/p>\n

Compatibilitatea cu aplica\u021biile ter\u021be se realizeaz\u0103 prin intermediul unui strat POSIX, suficient pentru a rula GCC \u0219i parte din utilitarele Busybox. Dintre aplica\u021biile portate pentru Essence se num\u0103r\u0103 biblioteca C Musl, emulatoarele Bochs, GCC, Binutils, FFmpeg \u0219i Mesa. Printre aplica\u021biile grafice create special pentru Essence se disting managerul de fi\u0219iere, editorul de text, clientul IRC, vizualizatorul de imagini \u0219i monitorul de sistem.

Sistemul poate func\u021biona pe echipamente mai vechi, cu mai pu\u021bin de 64 MB RAM \u0219i ocup\u0103 aproximativ 30 MB de spa\u021biu pe disc. Pentru economisirea resurselor, este executat\u0103 doar aplica\u021bia activ\u0103, iar toate programele de fundal sunt suspendate. \u00cenc\u0103rcarea dureaz\u0103 doar c\u00e2teva secunde, iar \u00eenchiderea se realizeaz\u0103 aproape instantaneu. Proiectul public\u0103 zilnic noi versiuni complete, utilizabile pentru testare \u00een QEMU.
