Spre deosebire de pfSense, proiectul se pozi\u021bioneaz\u0103 ca fiind necontrolat de o singur\u0103 companie, dezvoltat cu participarea direct\u0103 a comunit\u0103\u021bii \u0219i av\u00e2nd un proces de dezvoltare complet transparent, oferind de asemenea posibilitatea utiliz\u0103rii oric\u0103ror realiz\u0103ri \u00een produsele externe, inclusiv comerciale. Codurile surs\u0103 ale componentelor distribu\u021biei, precum \u0219i instrumentele utilizate pentru compilare, sunt distribuite sub licen\u021ba BSD. Compil\u0103rile sunt preg\u0103tite sub form\u0103 de LiveCD \u0219i imagine de sistem pentru scriere pe unit\u0103\u021bi Flash (339 MB).       <\/p>\n<p>Structura de baz\u0103 a distribu\u021biei se bazeaz\u0103 pe codul FreeBSD. Printre capacit\u0103\u021bile OPNsense se num\u0103r\u0103 un set complet deschis de instrumente de compilare, posibilitatea de instalare sub form\u0103 de c\u00e2teva pachete peste FreeBSD obi\u0219nuit, instrumente de balansare a \u00eenc\u0103rc\u0103turii, interfa\u021b\u0103 web pentru organizarea conect\u0103rii utilizatorilor la re\u021bea (Captive portal), existen\u021ba mecanismelor de urm\u0103rire a st\u0103rii conexiunilor (firewall stateful bazat pe pf), stabilirea limitelor de l\u0103\u021bime de band\u0103, filtrarea traficului, crearea  <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/prohoster.info\/ro\/vpn\/\"   title=\"VPN\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"200\">VPN<\/a> pe baza IPsec, OpenVPN \u0219i PPTP, integrare cu LDAP \u0219i RADIUS, suport pentru DDNS (DNS Dinamic), sistem de rapoarte \u0219i grafice vizibile.       <\/p>\n<p>\u00cen distribu\u021bie sunt oferite instrumente pentru crearea de configura\u021bii de rezisten\u021b\u0103 la defec\u021biuni, bazate pe utilizarea protocolului CARP \u0219i care permit pornirea, pe l\u00e2ng\u0103 firewalls-ul principal, a unui nod de rezerv\u0103, care va fi sincronizat automat la nivel de configura\u021bie \u0219i va prelua sarcina \u00een cazul unei defec\u021biuni a nodului primar. Administratorului i se ofer\u0103 o interfa\u021b\u0103 modern\u0103 \u0219i simpl\u0103 pentru configurarea firewalls-ului, construit\u0103 folosind framework-ul web Bootstrap.      <\/p>\n<p>Printre modific\u0103ri:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\">S-a realizat trecerea la ramura FreeBSD 13-STABLE (versiunea anterioar\u0103 era bazat\u0103 pe HardenedBSD 12.1).\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost asigurat un mesaj \u00een jurnal cu informa\u021bii despre nivelul de severitate (severity) pentru filtrarea jurnalelor dup\u0103 aceast\u0103 valoare.\n<li class=\"l\"> \u00cen compunere este inclus\u0103 utilitarea opnsense-log pentru inspectarea jurnalelor.\n<li class=\"l\"> \u00cen cadrul framework-ului tunables au fost ad\u0103ugate instrumente pentru redefinirea sysctl.\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost accelerat procesul de \u00eenc\u0103rcare \u0219i configurare a interfe\u021belor de re\u021bea. S-a realizat trecerea la utilizarea \u00eenc\u0103rc\u0103torului LUA.\n<li class=\"l\"> Au fost actualizate versiunile programelor suplimentare din porturi, de exemplu, filterlog 0.6, hostapd 2.10,
