A fost publicat primul num\u0103r experimental al proiectului Neptune OS, care dezvolt\u0103 un strat deasupra microkernel-ului seL4, implement\u00e2nd componente ale nucleului Windows NT, destinat s\u0103 ofere suport pentru executarea aplica\u021biilor Windows. Codul este distribuit sub licen\u021ba GPLv3. <\/p>\n

Proiectul implementeaz\u0103 \u201eNT Executive\u201d, unul dintre nivelurile nucleului Windows NT (NTOSKRNL.EXE), responsabil pentru furnizarea API-ului apelurilor de sistem NT Native \u0219i a interfe\u021bei pentru func\u021bionarea driverelor. \u00cen Neptune OS, componenta NT Executive \u0219i toate driverele sunt executate nu la nivel de nucleu, ci sub form\u0103 de procese utilizator \u00een cadrul unui mediu bazat pe microkernelul seL4. Interac\u021biunea dintre componenta NT Executive \u0219i drivere se realizeaz\u0103 prin IPC-ul standard seL4. Apelurile de sistem furnizate permit func\u021bionarea bibliotecii NTDLL.DLL cu implementarea interfe\u021bei de programare Win32, utilizat\u0103 \u00een aplica\u021bii. <\/p>\n

Prima versiune a Neptune OS include un driver pentru tastatur\u0103 (kbdclass.sys), un driver pentru portul PS\/2 (i8042prt.sys), un driver pentru semnalul sonor (beep.sys) \u0219i un interpret de linie de comand\u0103 (ntcmd.exe), transferate din ReactOS \u0219i care permit demonstrarea principiilor de baz\u0103 ale organiz\u0103rii activit\u0103\u021bii. Dimensiunea imaginii de \u00eenc\u0103rcare este de 1,4 MB. <\/p>\n

Scopul final este de a aduce stratul la un stadiu suficient pentru portarea mediu utilizator \u0219i a driverelor ReactOS. Dezvoltatorii iau \u00een considerare de asemenea posibilitatea de a ob\u021bine compatibilitate binar\u0103 cu fi\u0219ierele executabile Windows \u0219i compatibilitate acceptabil\u0103 la nivel de cod surs\u0103 cu driverele nucleului Windows. <\/p>\n

Ca principal obstacol \u00een asigurarea suportului pentru driverele Windows este men\u021bionat utilizarea \u00een majoritatea driverelor nucleului Windows a unui protocol de comunica\u021bie non-standard atunci c\u00e2nd se comunic\u0103 cu alte drivere, \u00een locul transferului direct al pointerilor, ceea ce nu poate fi realizat \u00een Neptune OS din cauza rul\u0103rii driverelor \u00een procese diferite.
