Proiectul RPM4 este dezvoltat de compania Red Hat \u0219i este utilizat \u00een distribu\u021bii precum RHEL (inclusiv proiectele derivate CentOS, Scientific Linux, AsiaLinux, Red Flag Linux, Oracle Linux), Fedora, SUSE, openSUSE, ALT Linux, OpenMandriva, Mageia, PCLinuxOS, Tizen \u0219i multe altele. Anterior, un grup independent de dezvoltatori a dezvoltat proiectul RPM5, care nu este direct legat de RPM4 \u0219i este \u00een prezent abandonat (nu a fost actualizat din 2010). Codul proiectului este distribuit sub licen\u021bele GPLv2 \u0219i LGPLv2.          <\/p>\n<p>Cele mai notabile \u00eembun\u0103t\u0103\u021biri \u00een RPM 4.18:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost propus un nou shell interactiv \u201erpmspec \u2014shell\u201d, care suport\u0103 lucrul cu macrocomenzi \u0219i Lua \u00eencorporat (rpmlua).\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost ad\u0103ugat\u0103 o nou\u0103 utilitate \u00een linia de comand\u0103 rpmuncompress, care simplific\u0103 deschiderea mai multor fi\u0219iere.\n<li class=\"l\"> Codul pentru gestionarea fi\u0219ierelor mari a fost revizuit, ad\u0103ug\u00e2nd protec\u021bie \u00eempotriva vulnerabilit\u0103\u021bilor care manipuleaz\u0103 linkurile simbolice \u00een timpul instal\u0103rii, recuper\u0103rii \u0219i cur\u0103\u021b\u0103rii.\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost ad\u0103ugat un nou backend OpenPGP pentru lucrul cu semn\u0103turile pachetelor, bazat pe proiectul Sequoia (implementare OpenPGP \u00een Rust).\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost propus un macro mai clar \u201eond\u201d pentru a determina condi\u021biile de compilare.\n<li class=\"l\"> \u00cen definirea dependen\u021belor slabe (weak dependency), a fost implementat suport pentru etichetele \u201emeta\u201d \u0219i \u201epre\u201d.\n<li class=\"l\"> Fi\u0219ierelor spec le-a fost ad\u0103ugat\u0103 o nou\u0103 sec\u021biune
