Eelco Dolstra, creator of the Nix package manager, announced his decision to step down as the head of the governing board of the non-profit organization NixOS Foundation, which supports the infrastructure, manages financial flows, and addresses legal issues of the NixOS project. This decision was made after the publication of a collective open letter criticizing Eelco's actions and expressing concerns for the future of Nix and NixOS. The letter was initially published by anonymous authors, but after it was posted, 160 people signed it.

The published open letter mentions a leadership crisis within the project and the current management's inability to adequately respond to community issues, resulting in these problems remaining unresolved for many years. In particular, it highlights the management's failure to establish and advocate for the values that the community should adhere to, as well as holding participants accountable for inappropriate behavior. According to the authors of the open letter, a toxic culture has developed within the community, and the leadership of NixOS Foundation is inactive in eradicating it.

It is claimed that the emergence of such a toxic culture, which threatens the project's viability, is a result of Eelco Dolstra's behavior as a leader, who undermines the authority of other participants, refuses to delegate powers to others, ignores community issues, and supports conflicts of interest. The letter states that the project has reached a turning point, after which further inaction may lead to a loss of trust, cessation of corporate support, departure of some of the most active participants, as well as the disintegration of the most active core of the community and the collapse of the moderation team. Those who signed the letter expressed their willingness to support a fork of the project should Eelco Dolstra not resign.
