Andreas Kling, creator of the SerenityOS operating system, announced his resignation from the role of 'benevolent dictator for life' (BDFL) of the project and his shift to the development of the Ladybird web browser fork, which was previously developed as part of SerenityOS. According to Andreas, for the last two years he had stepped away from the development of the operating system and focused solely on the growth of his own browser engine and the Ladybird application based on it. Since a strong community of over a thousand members capable of functioning without him had formed around SerenityOS, Andreas decided to fully switch to the development of the Ladybird browser and promote it as a self-sufficient and independent project from SerenityOS.

The Ladybird browser has evolved from a simple HTML viewer specific to SerenityOS into a cross-platform product that uses its own browser engine. In fact, the browser has outgrown SerenityOS and split the community into two groups — OS developers and cross-platform browser developers. As browser and operating system developers gradually distanced themselves and lost common interests, it was ultimately decided to completely separate these projects. After the split, Andreas will lead the development of the browser, while the group of main maintainers will take over the management of SerenityOS.
