D7VK func\u021bioneaz\u0103 prin transla\u021bia apelurilor \u00een API-ul Vulkan \u0219i permite, cu ajutorul Wine, rularea jocurilor retro \u00een Linux, legate de API-urile Direct3D 3, 5, 6 \u0219i 7. Codul proiectului este scris \u00een C++ \u0219i este distribuit sub licen\u021ba Zlib. Ca baz\u0103 \u00een dezvoltare, a fost folosit codul backend-ului d3d9 din proiectul DXVK \u2014 D7VK transform\u0103 API-urile Direct3D 3, 5, 6 \u0219i 7 \u00een apeluri Direct3D 9, care sunt apoi traduse \u00een API-ul Vulkan. API-ul Direct3D a ap\u0103rut \u00een versiunea DirectX 2, care este, \u00een mare parte, similar\u0103 cu DirectX 3.
