IWD poate ac\u021biona ca un backend pentru configuratoarele de re\u021bea precum Network Manager \u0219i ConnMan. Scopul principal al dezvolt\u0103rii noului demon Wifi este optimizarea consumului de resurse, cum ar fi consumul de memorie \u0219i dimensiunea pe disc. IWD nu utilizeaz\u0103 biblioteci externe \u0219i se bazeaz\u0103 doar pe func\u021bionalit\u0103\u021bile oferite de nucleul Linux (pentru func\u021bionare, sunt necesare doar nucleul Linux \u0219i Glibc). Codul proiectului este scris \u00een limbajul C \u0219i <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/\">este livrat<\/a><\/noindex> sub licen\u021ba LGPLv2.1.<\/p>\n<p>\u00cen <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/ChangeLog\">\u00een noul release<\/a><\/noindex>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"l\"> Este introdus suportul pentru standardul <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hotspot_(Wi-Fi)#Hotspot_2.0\">Hotspot 2.0<\/a><\/noindex> pentru autentificarea \u0219i roamingul utilizatorilor Wi-Fi;\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost ad\u0103ugat suport pentru tehnologia de roaming rapid FILS (Fast Initial Link Setup) Fast Transition, care permite comutarea \u00eentre punctele de acces pe m\u0103sur\u0103 ce utilizatorul se deplaseaz\u0103;\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost ad\u0103ugat modulul netconfig pentru gestionarea configura\u021biei de re\u021bea. Modulul se ocup\u0103 cu administrarea set\u0103rilor de re\u021bea cu adrese IP, corelate cu interfe\u021bele de re\u021bea, \u0219i asigur\u0103 men\u021binerea informa\u021biilor despre starea de adresare asociat\u0103 interfe\u021bei, inclusiv date despre adresele IP cunoscute, rute \u0219i adresele atribuite prin DHCP;\n<li class=\"l\"> A fost implementat un cadru de servicii de rezolvare a numelui, care abordeaz\u0103 diverse probleme legate de DNS. Pe baza acestui cadru, a fost realizat modulul resolve, care permite utilizarea plugin-urilor pentru integrarea cu rezolvatoare externe, precum systemd-resolved \u0219i dnsmasq.
