Proiectul a fost fondat de Mark Shuttleworth, un milionar din Africa de Sud, care a participat la dezvoltarea Debian Linux \u0219i a fost inspirat de ideea de a crea o distribu\u021bie de birou accesibil\u0103 pentru utilizatorii finali, cu un ciclu de dezvoltare fix previzibil.
