Demonul de gestionare \u0219i utilitarele Shepherd sunt scrise \u00een limbajul Guile (o implementare a limbajului Scheme), care este folosit \u0219i pentru a defini set\u0103rile \u0219i parametrii de pornire ai serviciilor. Shepherd este deja utilizat \u00een distribu\u021bia GuixSD GNU\/Linux \u0219i este de asemenea destinat utiliz\u0103rii \u00een GNU\/Hurd, dar poate func\u021biona pe orice sistem de operare compatibil POSIX pentru care este disponibil limbajul Guile.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd poate fi folosit at\u00e2t ca sistem de ini\u021bializare principal (init cu PID 1), c\u00e2t \u0219i \u00een mod separat pentru gestionarea proceselor de fundal ale utilizatorilor individuali (de exemplu, pentru a porni tor, privoxy, mcron etc.) cu executarea cu drepturile acestor utilizatori. Shepherd se ocup\u0103 de pornirea \u0219i oprirea serviciilor, av\u00e2nd \u00een vedere interdependen\u021bele dintre servicii, determin\u00e2nd \u0219i lans\u00e2nd dinamic serviciile de care depinde serviciul selectat.
