Philip Withnall de la companie Endless a propus</noindex> la conferința GUADEC 2020 cu o propunere</noindex> a introduce the impact of GNOME application development on the environment. For each application, it is suggested to display the "Carbon Cost" parameter, which shows the approximate level of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and allows for assessing how development affects global warming.

According to the speaker, although free software is provided at no cost, it has an indirect price — the impact of development on the environment. For example, the server infrastructure of the project, continuous integration servers, the work of the non-profit organization GNOME Foundation, and the organization of developer conferences require electricity and materials, the production processes of which lead to carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Applications also consume energy on user systems, which also indirectly affects the environment.

To reduce the "Carbon Cost", developers are encouraged to implement optimizations such as caching, improving code efficiency, reducing network load, and using predefined images in the continuous integration system, thus contributing to the fight against global warming. For example, using ready-made docker images in the continuous integration system can reduce the metric value by 4 times.

For each significant release, it is suggested to calculate the total "Carbon Cost", summing up the metrics of all applications, as well as the costs related to the GNOME project, the GNOME Foundation, hackfests, and the continuous integration system. Such a metric will enable development with consideration of environmental impacts, track dynamics, and make necessary optimizations.
