Bolo predstavené Gram, fork editora kódu Zed bez AI, externých služieb a telemetry

Kristoffer Grönlund, working at SUSE, announced the creation of a fork of the Zed code editor, which will develop under the name Gram. The reason for the fork is the desire to create a code editor that can serve as an alternative to VS Code, without using AI-based functionality, not imposing a Terms of Use agreement incompatible with open licenses, and not sending telemetry data to corporations. The development will focus on creating a product that is user-friendly for beginner developers and students taught by the fork's author. The project's code is distributed under GPLv3 and AGPLv3 licenses.

Among the differences between Gram and Zed are the discontinuation of AI tools and code for sending telemetry, the removal of dependencies on proprietary server-side handlers, third-party services, and components used for collaborative coding and automatic updates. Users of Gram are not subjected to separate Terms of Service or paid subscriptions.

The further development of the fork is planned to be done in a conservative style, independently from Zed and corporations, with a primary focus on ensuring stability. Acceptance of changes in Gram is conducted without the need to sign a Contributor License Agreement (CCA). Changes under the Apache 2.0 license will not be accepted in Gram; only GPLv3 and AGPLv3 licenses can be used for new code (Zed was supplied under three licenses: Apache 2.0, GPLv3, and AGPLv3, allowing its code to be used in proprietary products without opening changes).

At the same time, the first release of Gram was published, which removed code related to AI, telemetry, downloading and installing updates, collaborative coding, and account binding. Among the additional features, the editor includes documentation, added support for programming languages Gleam, Zig, and Odin, and implemented a Vim Supertab-style input autocompletion system. Installed extensions in Gram must be built from the source code and are not updated automatically. User confirmation for downloading LSP (Language Server) and Node components is now mandatory. Pre-built packages are prepared for Linux and macOS.

Zed kombinuje v jednom produkte ľahký textový editor a funkcie moderných integrovaných vývojových prostredí. Veľká pozornosť sa venuje výkonnosti a flexibilite rozhrania – podľa zamýšľania autorov projektu by všetky akcie pri úprave mali prebiehať okamžite a úlohy programovania by sa mali riešiť najefektívnejším spôsobom. Vysoký výkon Zed je dosahovaný aktívnym využívaním viacvláknovosti s využitím všetkých dostupných jadier CPU a zapojením GPU do procesu vykresľovania.
