A lightweight window manager IceWM 4.0.0 has been released. IceWM offers full management through keyboard shortcuts, the ability to use virtual desktops, taskbars, and application menus; tabs can be used for grouping windows. The window manager is configured through a fairly simple configuration file, and theming is possible. Window tabbing is supported. Built-in applets for monitoring CPU, memory, and traffic are available. Several third-party GUIs are also under development for configuration, desktop implementations, and menu editors. The code is written in C++ and is distributed under the GPLv2 license.
A significant version number change is a natural continuation of the version numbering used in the project (after releasing 3.9, 4.0 was formed). The new version has improved the Alt+Tab window switching interface, which can now handle a large number of windows in both horizontal and vertical modes. After activating the Alt+Tab interface, new features such as pressing the first letter of the application class name to jump to the next window of that class, using numeric keys or mouse clicks to select an application, navigating through windows with the arrow keys, and pressing the 'menu' button to open the system menu have been added.
The new version also includes transparency by default (alphaBlending=true) and 32-bit RGBA. A QuickSwitchPreview setting has been added, allowing application thumbnails to be displayed in the window switching interface. The DoubleBuffer setting has been removed. Icon sizes have been standardized (16, 22, 24, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256). The rendering of icons has been accelerated through caching. The size of text in the window template is limited to 128 bytes. The icesh utility now includes the options getWorkspaceName and getWorkspaceNames.
