Riadiaci d\u00e9mon a utilitky Shepherd s\u00fa nap\u00edsan\u00e9 v jazyku Guile (jedna z implement\u00e1ci\u00ed jazyka Scheme), ktor\u00fd sa rovnako pou\u017e\u00edva na definovanie nastaven\u00ed a parametrov spustenia slu\u017eieb. Shepherd sa u\u017e pou\u017e\u00edva v distrib\u00facii GuixSD GNU\/Linux a je zameran\u00fd aj na pou\u017eitie v GNU\/Hurd, ale m\u00f4\u017ee fungova\u0165 v akomko\u013evek POSIX-kompatibilnom OS, pre ktor\u00fd je dostupn\u00fd jazyk Guile.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd m\u00f4\u017ee sl\u00fa\u017ei\u0165 ako hlavn\u00fd syst\u00e9m inicializ\u00e1cie (init s PID 1), tak aj oddelene na riadenie pozadov\u00fdch procesov jednotliv\u00fdch pou\u017e\u00edvate\u013eov (napr\u00edklad na spustenie tor, privoxy, mcron a podobne) s vykon\u00e1van\u00edm pod pr\u00e1vami t\u00fdchto pou\u017e\u00edvate\u013eov. Shepherd vykon\u00e1va pr\u00e1cu pri sp\u00fa\u0161\u0165an\u00ed a zastavovan\u00ed slu\u017eieb, ber\u00fac do \u00favahy vz\u0165ahy medzi slu\u017ebami, dynamicky ur\u010duje a sp\u00fa\u0161\u0165a slu\u017eby, od ktor\u00fdch z\u00e1vis\u00ed vybran\u00e1 slu\u017eba.
