James Wilcox () from Mozilla change with the implementation of the parameter and the settings , allowing control over access to the page about:config in (a version of the Firefox engine for the Android platform). The setting will enable developers of embedded mobile browsers using the GeckoView-based engine to disable access to about:config by default if necessary, while restoring user access when needed.
The ability to disable access to about:config will be implemented in the Firefox 71 release code base, scheduled for December 3. Consideration is being given to disabling about:config by default in some versions of the mobile browser Fenix (Firefox Preview), which continues the development of Firefox for Android. However, to manage access to about:config in Fenix the aboutConfigEnabled setting allows restoring access to about:config if needed.
The reason for wanting to restrict access to about:config cites a situation where careless changes in about:config in Fennec (the old Firefox for Android) could easily render the browser inoperable. According to the initiator of the change, users should not be given access to unsafe methods of modifying Gecko engine parameters. Alternative proposals also included blocking dangerous settings through a whitelist of allowed parameters or adding a new section "about:features" to manage enabling experimental features.
