Pri razvoju izvirnih komponent Elementary OS se uporabljata GTK3, jezik Vala in lastni okvir Granite. Kot osnovo distribucije uporabljajo dosežke projekta Ubuntu. Na ravni paketov in podpore repozitorijev je Elementary OS 5.1.x združljiv z Ubuntu 18.04.
