Linux and the entire open-source industry continue to thrive. Just recently, open-source evangelist Eric Raymond about how, in the not-so-distant future, in his opinion, Windows will switch to a Linux kernel. And now, for smartphones has arrived.
A group called Fedora Mobility is working on this project. Interestingly, they had been inactive for 10 years but have now and begun to work actively. As for the browser, it is currently designed for installation only on the PinePhone, a smartphone developed by the Pine64 community. Soon, the group promises to present a version of the browser for other smartphones, including Librem 5 and OnePlus 5/5T.
Currently, the Fedora 33 (rawhide) repository has a set of packages for mobile devices with the Phosh user interface, which is controlled by a touchscreen. It is being developed by Purism for the Librem 5 phone. It includes the Phoc compositor, which runs on top of Wayland and is based on GNOME technologies (GTK, Gsettings, Dbus).
Developers have opened the opportunity to use the KDE Plasma Wayland environment. However, there are currently no corresponding packages in the repository. As for the available applications and components, here is the list:
- oFono — a stack for telephony access.
- chatty — a messenger based on libpurple.
- carbons — XMPP plugin for libpurple.
- pidgin — modified version of the instant messaging program pidgin, using the libpurple library for chatty.
- purple-mm-sms — a libpurple plugin for SMS working with ModemManager.
- purple-matrix — a Matrix plugin for libpurple.
- purple-telegram — a Telegram plugin for libpurple.
- calls — interface for dialing and receiving calls.
- feedbackd — a background process integrated with Phosh for physical feedback (vibration, LED indicators, sound signals).
- rtl8723cs-firmware — firmware for the Bluetooth chip used in the PinePhone.
- squeekboard — on-screen keyboard with Wayland support.
- pinephone-helpers — scripts for initializing the modem and switching audio streams during a phone call.
- gnome-terminal — terminal emulator.
- gnome-contacts — address book.
A little about the PinePhone smartphone

- Četvero-jedrni SoC ARM Allwinner A64.
- GPU Mali 400 MP2.
- 2 ali 3 GB RAM-a.
- 5,95-palčni zaslon (1440×720 IPS).
- Micro SD (z možnostjo zagona s SD kartice).
- 16 ali 32 GB eMMC.
- USB-C priključek z USB Host in združenim video izhodom za povezavo z monitorjem.
- 3,5 mm mini-jack.
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 (A2DP), GPS, GPS-A, GLONASS.
- Dve kameri (2 in 5 Mpx).
- Odstranljiva baterija 3000mAh.
- Strojno izklopni moduli LTE/GNSS, WiFi, mikrofon in zvočniki.
