An announcement of a complete transition has been made, citing limited hardware support and poor availability of software packages in FreeBSD as the main reasons.
They promise better support for GPUs, sound cards, streaming, and wireless networks, as well as Bluetooth support, always-updated software, fast booting, and support for Hybrid EFI/Legacy.
The reasons for switching to Void highlight runit (impressed by the speed and simplicity of the initialization system), LibreSSL by default, support for musl and libc, and the fast xbps package manager.
The Lumina graphical environment will be frozen during the transition to Void.
Trident-stable, which is based on FreeBSD 12, will continue to receive updates until January 2020, its repositories will be removed in April 2020. For Trident-release based on FreeBSD 13, updates have already ceased, and the repositories will be removed in January 2020.
The first version of Trident based on Void Linux will be released in January 2020, with 1-2 preliminary alpha versions to be released.
The project is working on porting its utilities to Void Linux, including addressing the missing support for ZFS-on-root. Another GUI package manager will be written instead of AppCafe.
