Program ratarmount (random access tar mount) is designed for mounting archive files into the file system and allows mounting not only tar files (compressed bz2, gz, xz, or zstd) but also zip and rar through FUSE. The new release 1.0.0 is available for installation from pip and AppImage.
There are several features that distinguish ratarmount from the existing archivemount. First of all, access to mounted files is actually fast, regardless of the archive size. For example, for 100 GB archives, we are talking about milliseconds of latency with ratarmount versus hours with archivemount. Additionally, ratarmount has a parallel bz2 and xz decoder, and offers advanced features such as creating an index file for quick subsequent access, merge mounting, bind mounting, and even arbitrary deep recursive mounting.
