Enthusiasts managed to boot a Linux 5.0 kernel environment on the ESP32 board with a dual-core Tensilica Xtensa processor (esp32 devkit v1 board, without a full MMU), equipped with 2 MB of Flash and 8 MB of PSRAM, connected via SPI interface. A ready-made Linux firmware image for ESP32 has been prepared for booting. The boot process takes about 6 minutes.
The firmware is formed based on the JuiceVm virtual machine image and the Linux 5.0 kernel port. JuiceVm provides the minimum possible wrapper for RISC-V systems capable of booting on chips with a few hundred kilobytes of RAM. JuiceVm supports the launch of OpenSBI (RISC-V Supervisor Binary Interface), a binding interface for booting the Linux kernel and a minimal system environment from platform-specific firmware for ESP32. In addition to Linux, JuiceVm also supports booting FreeRTOS and RT-Thread.
