Distribucija je osnovana 2003. godine na osnovi Mandrake Linuxa (budu\u0107e Mandriva), ali se kasnije odvojila kao samostalni projekt. Vrh popularnosti PCLinuxOS-a dogodio se 2010. godine, kada je, prema <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=28492\">rezultatih<\/a><\/noindex> ankete bralcev revije Linux Journal, PCLinuxOS zaostajal le za Ubuntu (v oceni iz leta 2013 je PCLinuxOS \u017ee <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opennet.ru\/opennews\/art.shtml?num=38572\">zasedal<\/a><\/noindex> 10. mesto). Distribucija je namenjena uporabi v Live-Na\u010dinu, vendar podpira tudi namestitev na trdi disk. Za prenos <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/ftp.nluug.nl\/pub\/os\/Linux\/distr\/pclinuxos\/pclinuxos\/live-cd\/64bit\/\">so pripravljene<\/a><\/noindex> potpunoj (2 GB) i skra\u0107enoj (1.2 GB) verziji distribucije baziranoj na KDE desktop okru\u017eenju. Zajednica je tako\u0111er <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/pclosusers.com\/communityiso\/\">se razvijaju<\/a><\/noindex> izdelke, ki temeljijo na namiznih okoljih Xfce, MATE, LXQt, LXDE in Trinity.<\/p>\n<p>PCLinuxOS se odlikuje po uporabi orodij za upravljanje paketov APT iz D\u0435bian GNU\/Linux v kombinaciji z uporabo upravitelja paketov RPM, s tem da spada v razred rolling-distribucij, kjer so posodobitve paketov nenehno na voljo in uporabnik kadarkoli lahko preide na najnovej\u0161e razli\u010dice programov brez \u010dakanja na ustvarjanje nove izdaje distribucije. Repozitorij PCLinuxOS vsebuje pribli\u017eno 14000 paketov.<br \/>\nkao sistem inicijalizacije koristi sysvinit.<\/p>\n<p>U osnovnoj isporuci uklju\u010dene su aplikacije poput alata za rezervno kopiranje Timeshift, menad\u017eera lozinki Bitwarden, sistema za obradu fotografija Darktable, ure\u0111iva\u010da slika GIMP, sistema za upravljanje kolekcijom slika Digikam, alata za sinhronizaciju podataka u cloud skladi\u0161tima Megasync, sistema za daljinski pristup Teamviewer, sistema za upravljanje aplikacijama Rambox, programa za vo\u0111enje bele\u0161ki Simplenotes, multimedijalnog centra Kodi, interfejsa za \u010ditanje elektronskih knjiga Calibre, finansijskog paketa Skrooge, pretra\u017eiva\u010da Firefox, email klijenta Thunderbird, muzi\u010dkog plejera Strawberry i video plejera VLC. <\/p>\n<p>U novom izdanju a\u017eurirane su verzije paketa, uklju\u010duju\u0107i Linux kernal 5.3.10, NVIDIA drajver 430.64, KDE Plasma desktop 5.17.3, KDE Applications 19.08.3 i KDE Frameworks 5.64.0. U Xfce verziji a\u017eurirani su Thunar 1.8.10, xfce4-whiskermenu-plugin 2.3.4, xfce4-screenshooter 1.9.7, xfburn 0.6.1.
