Developers from Red Hat have announced the readiness of the gnome-info-collect tool for gathering telemetry about systems using the GNOME environment. Users wishing to participate in data collection are provided with ready-made packages for Ubuntu, openSUSE, Arch Linux, and Fedora.
The information collected will allow for the analysis of GNOME user preferences and to consider them in decision-making related to enhancing usability and developing the shell. With the data obtained, developers will better understand user needs and identify key areas of focus.
Gnome-info-collect is a simple client-server application that gathers system data and sends it to the GNOME server. The data is processed anonymously, without retaining information about specific users and hosts, but to avoid duplicates, the data is tied to a salted hash created based on the computer's identifier (/etc/machine-id) and username. Before sending, the prepared data is shown to the user for confirmation of the operation. Data that could potentially identify the system, such as the IP address and the exact time on the user's side, is filtered out and does not enter the log. server.
