Alexander Larsson, the creator of Flatpak and a Red Hat employee, presented a preliminary version of patches implementing the Composefs filesystem for the Linux kernel. The proposed filesystem is reminiscent of Squashfs and is also suitable for mounting images in read-only mode. The differences boil down to enabling efficient shared storage of the contents of multiple mounted disk images in Composefs and supporting authentication of the read data. Use cases where Composefs might be in demand include mounting container images and applying it to Git-like OSTree repositories.
Composefs uses a content-addressable storage model, meaning the primary identifier is not the filename but rather a hash of the file's contents. This model provides deduplication and effectively allows the storage of only one copy of identical files found across different mounted partitions. For example, container images contain numerous standard system files, and with Composefs, each of these files will be shared among all mounted images without employing tricks like hard links. In this way, shared files are not only stored as a single copy on disk but also accounted for with one entry in the page cache, which helps save both disk and RAM.
To save disk space, data and metadata in mounted images are separate. When mounting, the following are specified:
- A binary index that contains all the metadata of the filesystem, including filenames, access rights, and other information, excluding the actual content of the files.
- The base directory where the contents of all mounted images are stored. Files are stored linked to the hash of their contents.
