Andreas HĂŒttel (Andreas K. Huettel) from the team responsible for Gentoo Linux releases (Release Engineering team) announced the start of creating experimental Gentoo disk images in QCOW2 format, which allow for a fully operational system environment ready to boot in virtual machines. The images are planned to be updated weekly, enabling their use for assessing the current state of the distribution. Previously, only installation images and Live builds for booting from USB devices were distributed by the project.
Two versions of console environment images are available for download â a full version (1.2 GB) and a stripped-down version without multilib (233 MB). By default, network services such as sshd do not run in the images, and the root password is set to an empty value. In the future, a version for cloud environments with configuration through 'cloud-init' is planned.
