Developers of the openSUSE distribution have implemented the ability to parallelize the downloading of packages and metadata in the Zypper package manager. Additionally, a new backend has been offered that more efficiently reuses already established connections and enhances metadata processing efficiency. When updating 250 packages with a total size of 100 MB, the download time after enabling the new backend and parallel mode was reduced from 68.7 seconds to 13.1 seconds, and when updating 407 packages with a size of 1 GB â from 281.1 seconds to 119.6 seconds.
Parallel downloading is available starting from releases libzypp 17.36.4 and zypper 1.14.87, currently only located in the Tumbleweed and Slowroll repositories. By default, these features are still disabled and are presented as experimental. To enable parallel downloading and the new backend, you can use the environment variables 'ZYPP_PCK_PRELOAD=1' and 'ZYPP_CURL2=1', while the setting for the number of simultaneous connections is controlled using the 'download.max_concurrent_connections' parameter in the zypp.conf configuration file.
