Matthew Wilcox from Oracle, known for creating the nvme (NVM Express) driver and the direct access mechanism for the DAX file system, has proposed removing the ReiserFS file system from the Linux kernel, similar to how the outdated ext and xiafs file systems were previously removed, or to scale down the ReiserFS code, retaining only the support for read-only mode operation.
The motive for the removal stems from the added difficulties in modernizing the kernel infrastructure, caused by the necessity for developers to keep the outdated AOP_FLAG_CONT_EXPAND flag handler in the kernel specifically for ReiserFS, since it remains the only file system using this flag in the write_begin function. Moreover, the last fix in the ReiserFS code dates back to 2019, and it is unclear how in demand this file system is and whether anyone is still using it.
Jan KĂĄra from SUSE agreed that ReiserFS is on the path to obsolescence, but it is unclear if it is outdated enough to be removed from the kernel. According to Jan, ReiserFS continues to be supplied in openSUSE and SLES, but the user base for this file system is minimal and continually shrinking. Support for ReiserFS among corporate users in SUSE ceased 3-4 years ago, and the module for ReiserFS is not included by default in the kernel package. As an option, Jan suggested starting to display a deprecation warning when mounting ReiserFS partitions and to consider this file system ready for removal if no one expresses the desire to continue using it within a year or two.
The discussion was joined by Eduard Shishkin, who maintains the ReiserFS file system, providing a patch that removes the use of the AOP_FLAG_CONT_EXPAND flag from the ReiserFS code. Matthew Wilcox accepted the patch into his branch. Thus, the reason for removal has been eliminated, and the question of excluding ReiserFS from the kernel can be considered postponed for a considerable time.
