Windows 10 disk cleanup utility will no longer delete important files

The Disk Cleanup utility has been a part of all Windows versions and serves as a useful tool integrated into the OS. It allows users to delete temporary files, old and cached data without manual cleaning or third-party applications. However, Windows 10 introduced a more modern version called Storage Sense, which addresses this task more flexibly. It complements Disk Cleanup.

Storage Sense appeared in build 1809, but in the current insider version the utility has undergone some significant changes. The previous version of Storage Sense could delete files from the 'Downloads' folder. In build number 19018, the cleaning of the 'Downloads' folder has become optional for users, which is now the default setting.

The change log confirms this. And while at first glance this may seem like a minor improvement, it is encouraging that the company in Redmond is striving to consider user feedback. One can only hope that the corporation will address other requests in a similar manner. For example, updates for 'File Explorer' would be welcome.

It should be noted that the next update, codenamed 19H2, will start being delivered to consumers on November 12, while patch number 20H1 will be available early next year.
