Projekti OpenBSD u themelua nga Theo de Raadt n\u00eb vitin 1995 pas nj\u00eb konflikti me zhvilluesit e NetBSD, si rezultat i t\u00eb cilit Theo u p\u00ebrjashtua nga depoja CVS e NetBSD. Pas k\u00ebsaj, Theo de Raadt dhe nj\u00eb grup bashk\u00ebpun\u00ebtor\u00ebsh krijuan nj\u00eb sistem operativ t\u00eb ri t\u00eb hapur mbi baz\u00ebn e pem\u00ebs s\u00eb kodit burimor t\u00eb NetBSD, me q\u00ebllime kryesore zhvillimi q\u00eb p\u00ebrfshijn\u00eb portabilitetin (mb\u00ebshteten 13 platforma harduerike), standardizimin, funksionimin e sakt\u00eb, sigurin\u00eb proaktive dhe mjete t\u00eb integruara kriptografike.
