Benjamin Summerton, author of the PSRayTracing ray tracing system, analyzed the impact on application performance of using the C++ keyword «final», introduced in the C++11 standard. The reason for the testing was due to claims circulating online that the use of «final» improves performance, which were largely based on subjective judgments without presenting results of the changes.

The testing conducted by Benjamin showed that the performance when using «final» heavily depends on the compiler. When compiled with GCC, performance indeed increased significantly in many cases, but when compiled with Clang and MSVC, performance decreased in most cases, often noticeably. In addition to the compiler, the platform had a large influence; for example, performance drops were more pronounced on systems with AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPUs than on systems with Apple M1 CPUs.

"Sofiyada

For instance, on an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX system with Ubuntu 23.10, when compiled with Clang, a slowdown of at least 5% was observed in 90% of tests using «final», but in 2.5% of cases, an acceleration of at least 5% was recorded. For GCC, a slowdown of 5% was noted in 0.9% of cases, while an acceleration of 5% was observed in 15.8% of cases. In MSVC, a 5% slowdown was seen in 26.2% of tests, and a 5% acceleration in 13.3%. The author of the study concluded that it is necessary to avoid using «final».
