Andreas Kling, the creator of the SerenityOS operating system, announced that he is stepping down from his role as the "benevolent dictator for life" (BDFL) of the project and shifting his focus to the development of the Ladybird web browser fork, which was previously being developed as part of SerenityOS. According to Andreas, for the past two years, he has distanced himself from the development of the operating system and focused solely on advancing his own browser engine and the Ladybird application based on it, which implements the web browser. Given that a strong community has formed around SerenityOS, consisting of more than a thousand participants who are capable of managing without him, Andreas decided to fully switch to developing the Ladybird browser and promoting it as a self-sufficient and independent project from SerenityOS.

The Ladybird browser has evolved from a simple HTML viewer specific to SerenityOS into a cross-platform product that utilizes its own browser engine. In fact, the browser has outgrown SerenityOS and divided the community into two groups — developers of the OS and developers of the cross-platform browser. As the developers working on the browser and operating system gradually moved further apart and lost common interests, it was ultimately decided to completely separate these projects. After the split, Andreas will lead the development of the browser, while the core maintainer group will take over the management of SerenityOS.
