The founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, suggested that the DDoS attack on the messenger that occurred on Wednesday, causing service disruptions, may have been orchestrated by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n

The founder of Telegram wrote on Twitter that the DDoS attack primarily utilized Chinese IP addresses. He also emphasized that traditionally, the largest DDoS attacks on Telegram coincide with protests in Hong Kong, and this case was no exception.<\/p>\n

The Telegram messenger is heavily used by residents of Hong Kong, as it allows them to avoid detection while organizing and coordinating protests. An attack on Telegram may indicate that the Chinese government is attempting to disrupt the messenger's functionality and limit its effectiveness as a tool for organizing large-scale protests.<\/p>\n

According to network sources, applications like Telegram and Firechat, which allow encrypted messaging, are currently very popular among users in the App Store in Hong Kong. This is not surprising, as many protesters try to conceal their identity. In addition to using messengers that transmit data in encrypted form, protesters also attempt to cover their faces to avoid identification by facial recognition systems.<\/p>\n

Recall that a massive protest against amendments to the extradition law took place in Hong Kong on Wednesday.
