The essence of the vulnerability is that the MS-NRPC protocol (Netlogon Remote Protocol) allows a fallback to using an unencrypted RPC connection during authentication data exchange. After that, an attacker can exploit a flaw in the AES-CFB8 algorithm to spoof a successful system login. On average, about 256 spoofing attempts are required for administrator access. It is not necessary to have a working account on the domain controller \u2014 spoofing attempts can be made using an incorrect password. An NTLM authentication request will be redirected to the domain controller, which will return an access denial, but the attacker can substitute this response, and the attacked system will consider the login successful.<\/p>\n

In Samba, the vulnerability only manifests in systems that do not use the 'server schannel = yes' setting, which has been enabled by default since Samba 4.8. In particular, systems with 'server schannel = no' and 'server schannel = auto' settings may be compromised, allowing Samba to exploit the same flaws in the AES-CFB8 algorithm as in Windows. <\/p>\n
