Release of the cross-platform client-server backup system Bacula 13.0.0 has been presented. Version 12.x has been skipped to separate the version numbering between the free and commercial editions â odd branch numbers are used in the free version, while even numbers are used in the commercial one. The code for the free edition of Bacula is distributed under the AGPLv3 license, but excessive control over the development process and functional restrictions in favor of the commercial version several years ago led to the creation of a fork â Bareos, which is actively developed and competes with Bacula.
Key innovations in Bacula 13.0.0:
- A new backup catalog format has been implemented, requiring simultaneous updates of the Director process and Storage Daemon responsible for providing resources for saving backups. The File Daemon needs to be updated if it runs on the same system as the new Director or Storage. Necessary tools are included to automate the conversion of the old catalog format to the new one, but the update process will require approximately twice as much disk space as currently occupied by the backup catalog.
- Support for "storage groups" has been implemented.
- A plugin for Kubernetes has been added.
- An option for saving only file ACLs and metadata separately has been added.
- Support for Windows CSV (Cluster Shared Volumes) has been added.
- The object catalog now allows the use of tags.
- SHA256 and SHA512 hashes are allowed in the FileSet.
- LDAP authentication capability has been added.
