Release of the Toybox 0.8.12 system utilities set has been published, optimized for minimal resource consumption. Like BusyBox, all utilities in the set are accessible through a single executable file. The project is developed by a former maintainer of BusyBox and is distributed under the 0BSD license. The goal of creating Toybox is to provide manufacturers with the option to use a minimalist set of standard utilities without opening the source code of modified components. In terms of capabilities, Toybox is still lagging behind BusyBox, but 316 basic commands (235 fully and 81 partially) of the planned 392 have already been implemented.
Among the innovations in Toybox 0.8.12:
- The 'tar' utility has added support for the zstd compression algorithm and the ability to work with outdated archive formats.
- The 'getconf' utility now supports the NPROCESSORS_CONF and NPROCESSORS_ONLN environment variables.
- The 'netcat' utility has added the '-o' and '-O' options.
- The 'devmem' utility has implemented the '--no-mmap', '-f FILE', and '--no-sync' options.
- The 'test' utility has added the '-ef', '-ot', and '-nt' options.
- The 'dmesg' utility has added the '-W' option.
- The 'mount' utility now supports 'LABEL='.
- The content of /usr/share/hwdata has been taken into account in 'lsusb' and 'lspci'.
- Errors have been fixed and implementations improved for the utilities grep, host, find, chmod, tar, ps, test, file, patch, cp, lsusb, top, blkid, ionice, and microcom.
- Support for building for riscv32 and riscv64 platforms has been added.
