Internet Archive planerar att bevara offentliga inlÀgg frÄn nedlagda Google+

Google's social network did not take off in the same way as its previous social service, Wave. Of course, the reasons for the failure are somewhat different, but the fact remains — Google + is shutting down. And although the number of users interacting on this platform was much lower than on Facebook, there is still valuable information there.

Understanding this, the Internet Archive team decided to preserve the public records of the social network before the service itself is shut down. This was stated by representatives of the "Archive" on Reddit..

Records that have already been deleted or closed will not be archived. The Internet Archive has urged users who do not want their records to become public to delete their accounts — in this case, the content will not be archived.

Moreover, there are limitations in the archiving system for open posts. In particular, no more than 500 comments will be preserved, and they will be presented as HTML pages. It is still unclear whether Internet Archive representatives will be able to save a greater number of comments. Additionally, images and videos will not be saved in full resolution — in order to save space, the quality will be reduced.

Earlier, Google announced that it was shutting down the social network for two reasons. The first is the existence of a vulnerability, which allowed third-party developers to access user data from 2015 to 2018 (the company only realized this three years later). Moreover, after fixing the vulnerability, the company chose not to make this issue public.

The problem is that if a user granted any application access to their data, the vulnerability allowed third-party developers to obtain private information from not only that user's profile but also from their friends' profiles. The scale of the problem is relatively small — around 500 thousand accounts were affected.

At the same time, Google stated that it is unknown whether anyone used the data. However, it was possible to scrape users' names, emails, dates of birth, profile pictures, occupations, etc.

The second problem is the service's low usage. Simply put, it was unpopular despite all the corporation's attempts to improve the situation.
