Den nya MySQL-hanteringsmodellen syftar till att engagera gemenskapen i utvecklingen.

Heather VanCura, vice president at Oracle responsible for community engagement, presented the second phase of the initiative to foster closer ties with the community and accelerate MySQL development. While the first phase focused on increasing transparency in processes and involving the community in defining the MySQL development path, the second phase will concentrate on engaging community representatives in development. Goals include speeding up innovation, providing clear pathways for conveying changes, and expanding the MySQL ecosystem.

To implement this intention, a Steering Committee has been established, which will include representatives from the community, define the development strategy for MySQL, and serve as a link to the MySQL ecosystem. The inaugural committee will include not only Oracle employees but also representatives from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud.

The committee will address issues related to long-term development prioritization, ecosystem expansion, project management modernization, community involvement in development, and obtaining feedback from the community. However, the committee does not replace technical leadership and will not interfere in everyday development processes.

To engage community representatives in the work, a new management model has been proposed, defining the following roles:

  • Contributors write code, test, review, document, and participate in technical discussions. A contributor can be a community representative and not just an Oracle employee.
  • Committers review changes and ensure code quality. Initially, the committers' team will be made up of Oracle employees, but in the future, the right to commit may be granted to established contributors from the community.
  • Project leads are responsible for making technical decisions and planning development in specific areas, such as tools, optimizer, runtime, InnoDB, and so on.
  • Core Project Lead is responsible for the MySQL Community Edition product.
  • The Vulnerability Group is responsible for analyzing vulnerability reports, coordinating vulnerability fixes, and disclosing information about security issues.

Styrningsmodellen har utvecklats i samband med diskussionen pÄ MySQL Contributor Summit, dÀr organisationer som Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud, Percona, ProxySQL, Readyset, VillageSQL och MariaDB Foundation deltog.
