In the context of the Forgejo project, a fork of the collaborative development platform Gitea has been established. The reason cited for this was the rejection of attempts to commercialize the project and the concentration of management in the hands of a commercial company. According to the creators of the fork, the project should remain independent and belong to the community. Forgejo will continue to adhere to the previous principles of independent management.
On October 25, the founder of Gitea (Lunny) and one of the active participants (techknowlogick) announced the creation of the commercial company Gitea Limited without prior consultation with the community, transferring the rights to domÀner and trademarks (the trademarks and domains initially belonged to the project's founder). The company declared its intention to develop an extended commercial version of the Gitea platform, provide paid support services, conduct training, and create a cloud hosting repository.
It was stated that the Gitea project itself remains open and community-owned, and Gitea Limited will act as an intermediary between the community and other companies interested in using and developing Gitea. The new company also intended to provide part-time employment for several maintainers of Gitea (with plans to eventually transition them to full-time and hire additional developers). There were also plans to create a special fund through which external companies could sponsor the implementation of desired innovations, optimizations, and fixing specific shortcomings.
This step was viewed by some community members as a takeover of project management. Before the fork was created, an open letter was published, signed by 50 Gitea developers, proposing to create a non-profit organization owned by the community for the curation of the project, and to transfer the trademarks and domains of Gitea to it rather than a commercial company. Gitea Limited ignored the community's proposal and confirmed that it now fully controls the project. After this, the decision was made that the community had no choice but to create a fork and consider it the main project for further development.
