The proprietary Vivaldi 7.6 browser has been released, developed on the Chromium engine by former developers of the Opera Presto engine. Vivaldi builds are prepared for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Changes made to the Chromium codebase are distributed under an open license. The browser's interface is written in JavaScript using the React library, Node.js platform, Browserify, and various ready-made NPM modules. The implementation of the interface is available in the source texts, but under a proprietary license.
The project aims to create a customizable and functional browser that maintains user data privacy. Key features include a tracker and ad blocker, note, history and bookmark managers, a private browsing mode, secure end-to-end encrypted synchronization, a tab grouping mode, a sidebar, a configurator with numerous settings, a horizontal tab display mode, and in testing mode, a built-in email client, RSS reader, and calendar.
The new version features the following improvements:
- The tab bar can now be customized like other panels, by dragging buttons and controls from other panels. All necessary buttons can be dragged to the tab bar by disabling the other panels, allowing for maximum screen space with a narrow panel at the top. The unofficial name for this feature is 'single-row panel', which could previously be achieved with unofficial modifications to the Vivaldi browser.
- Instead of separate buttons for synchronized tabs and the recently closed tabs menu, a single button has been added that provides access to all tabs â open, unvisited, synchronized, duplicates, and recently closed.
- The address bar now includes an option to search through open tabs, history, and bookmarks. To activate this feature, simply type '@' and then select the desired search category from the list.
- All context menus are now more compactly designed, with similar options grouped into submenus.
- Automatic opening of the settings dialog is implemented when creating a group (with an option to disable in settings).
