Utgåvan av Linux-distributionen Pop!_OS 20.04

Företag System76, som specialiserar sig på tillverkning av bärbara datorer, datorer och servrar, levererade med Linux, publicerade utgivning av distributionen Pop!_OS 20.04, som utvecklas för leverans på System76s hårdvara istället för den tidigare erbjudna distributionen Ubuntu och som kommer med en omarbetad skrivbordsmiljö. Pop!_OS är baserad på paketbasen Ubuntu 20.04 och anges även som en utgåva med långsiktigt stöd (LTS). Projektets insatser sprids licensieras under GPLv3. ISO-avbilder är skapade för x86_64-arkitektur i varianter för grafikkort från NVIDIA och Intel/AMD (2 GB).

Pop!_OS levereras med modifierad GNOME Shell, originaltemat system76-pop, med sin uppsättning av ikoner, andra typsnitt (Fira och Roboto Slab), ändrade inställningar och en utökad uppsättning drivrutiner. Projektet utvecklar tre tillägg till GNOME Shell: Suspend button för att ändra avstängnings-/sovknappen, Always show workspaces för att alltid visa förhandsvisningar av virtuella skrivbord i översiktsläge och Right-click för att se detaljerad information om programmet vid högerklick på ikonen.

Distributionen är främst inriktad på personer som använder datorn för att skapa något nytt, till exempel de som arbetar med innehållsskapande, programvaruprodukter, 3D-modeller, grafik, musik eller vetenskapligt arbete. Tanken att utveckla en egen utgåva av Ubuntu kom efter att Canonical beslutat att överföra Ubuntu från Unity till GNOME Shell — utvecklarna på System76 började skapa ett nytt tema baserat på GNOME, men insåg sedan att de var redo att erbjuda användarna en annan skrivbordsmiljö som ger flexibla verktyg för att anpassa arbetsflödet.

I den nya versionen:

• För nya installationer används som standard ett mörkt skrivbordstema. En ljusare tema kan aktiveras i konfigureraren under avsnittet för utseendeställningar.
  
• Full keyboard navigation features have been implemented for desktop use without the need for a mouse. Using keyboard shortcuts, you can launch applications, switch between programs, and quickly change settings. In addition to the default hotkeys, an alternative navigation mode styled after Vim is also available. A menu item 'View All Shortcuts' has been added in the upper right corner to view all hotkeys.
  
  
  
• An automatic window tiling mode has been implemented that organizes windows in a grid after opening an application. You can adjust the position and size of windows using the keyboard without touching the mouse. The mode is enabled through the system menu.
  
• Virtual desktops have been added, allowing users to group related content together and separate unrelated active applications from the current workflow into their own spaces. You can use the keyboard to switch between virtual desktops and move windows within them.
  
• The application installation interface, Pop!_Shop, now supports self-contained packages in Flatpak format and the Flathub repository.
• Working on hybrid graphics systems has been simplified. In addition to a switch for rendering with either the integrated Intel graphics card or the discrete NVIDIA card, a 'Hybrid Graphics' mode has been added to the system menu, allowing the laptop to primarily use the energy-efficient Intel GPU and switch to the more powerful discrete NVIDIA GPU only for specific applications.
  

  When launching a specific program, you can also select 'Launch using Dedicated Graphics Card' in the context menu to use the NVIDIA GPU. Application developers and package maintainers can also choose the discrete GPU by default by specifying the option 'X-KDE-RunOnDiscreteGpu=true' in the .desktop file.

  
• A Firmware section has been added to the settings, allowing firmware updates for hardware components at the push of a button, not only for System76 hardware but for any other suppliers that publish updates through the LVFS (Linux Vendor Firmware Service).
• An applet has been added to the panel that uses indicators for quick access to application settings similar to those of Slack, Dropbox, and Discord.
• Offline-uppdateringsläget har lagts till, vilket gör att uppdateringar kan laddas ner i bakgrunden först och sedan tillämpas vid en bekväm tidpunkt.
