Release of the specialized distribution Tails 4.18 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System) has been prepared, based on the Debian package system and designed to ensure anonymous internet access. Anonymous access in Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections, except traffic through the Tor network, are blocked by the packet filter by default. User data storage in persistent mode between launches uses encryption. An ISO image, capable of running in Live mode, has been prepared, with a size of 1 GB.
In this new release, the notification about the need to synchronize system clocks ('Synchronizing the systemâs clock') has been removed when connecting to the Tor network. Poedit has been removed, and the project has transitioned to Weblate for translation management. Versions of Tor Browser 10.0.16 and Thunderbird 78.9.0 have been updated. Firmware packages have been updated, and support for wireless and graphic chips has improved. HTTPS is now used for accessing Debian repositories to enhance reliability, instead of connecting via the onion address (Debian's onion services have been experiencing failures).
A new version of the Tor Browser 10.0.16, focused on anonymity, security, and privacy, has been released simultaneously. This release is synchronized with Firefox 78.10.0 ESR codebase, in which 8 vulnerabilities have been fixed. The NoScript version 11.2.4 has been updated. The use of SVG Context Paint is prohibited. Developers also reminded that support for the second version of the Tor protocol is scheduled for removal from the codebase on July 15, 2021, and a new stable release of Tor without support for the old protocol will be released on October 15, 2021.
