Projektet Chrony erbjuder en oberoende implementation av NTP-klient och server, som redan anv\u00e4nds f\u00f6r exakt tidsynkronisering i Fedora, SUSE\/openSUSE och RHEL. NTS s\u00e4kerst\u00e4ller att klienten ansluter till en legitim NTP-server och inte en manipulerad. Manipulering av NTP-servern utg\u00f6r en s\u00e4kerhetsrisk eftersom fel tidsinst\u00e4llningar kan anv\u00e4ndas f\u00f6r att kompromettera andra tidsberoende protokoll, som TLS och DNSSEC. Tids\u00e4ndringar kan leda till felaktig tolkning av certifikatdata. <\/p>\n

Protokollet NTS anv\u00e4nder element fr\u00e5n offentliga nyckelinfrastrukturer (PKI) f\u00f6r att organisera en krypterad kommunikationskanal och m\u00f6jligg\u00f6r anv\u00e4ndning av TLS och autentiserad kryptering AEAD (Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data) f\u00f6r att skydda anv\u00e4ndare fr\u00e5n attacker som imiterar NTP-servrar. NTS omfattar tv\u00e5 separata protokoll: NTS-KE (NTS Key Establishment), som anv\u00e4nds f\u00f6r att hantera initial autentisering och nyckelsamordning \u00f6ver TLS, och NTS-EF (NTS Extension Fields), som ansvarar f\u00f6r kryptering och autentisering av tidsynkroniseringssessionen. NTS l\u00e4gger till flera utvidgade f\u00e4lt i NTP-paketen och lagrar all statusinformation endast p\u00e5 klientsidan, med hj\u00e4lp av en cookie-\u00f6verf\u00f6ringsmekanism.
