Shepherd anv\u00e4nds redan i distributionen GuixSD GNU\/Linux och siktar \u00e4ven p\u00e5 att anv\u00e4ndas i GNU\/Hurd, men kan fungera p\u00e5 vilken POSIX-kompatibel OS som helst, f\u00f6r vilken spr\u00e5ket Guile \u00e4r tillg\u00e4ngligt.<\/p>\n<p>Shepherd kan anv\u00e4ndas b\u00e5de som det prim\u00e4ra init-systemet (init med PID 1) och i ett frist\u00e5ende l\u00e4ge f\u00f6r att hantera bakgrundsprocesser f\u00f6r enskilda anv\u00e4ndare (till exempel f\u00f6r att starta tor, privoxy, mcron osv.) och k\u00f6ras med dessa anv\u00e4ndares r\u00e4ttigheter. Shepherd ansvarar f\u00f6r att starta och stoppa tj\u00e4nster med h\u00e4nsyn till tj\u00e4nsternas inb\u00f6rdes samband, vilket dynamiskt definierar och startar de tj\u00e4nster som den valda tj\u00e4nsten \u00e4r beroende av.
