IWD kan anv\u00e4ndas som en frist\u00e5ende l\u00f6sning, samt fungera som en backend f\u00f6r n\u00e4tverkskonfiguratorer som Network Manager och ConnMan. Projektet \u00e4r l\u00e4mpligt f\u00f6r inbyggda enheter och \u00e4r optimerat f\u00f6r minimalt minnes- och lagringsutrymmesanv\u00e4ndning. IWD anv\u00e4nder inga externa bibliotek och utnyttjar endast de funktioner som tillhandah\u00e5lls av den standardiserade Linux-k\u00e4rnan (endast Linux-k\u00e4rnan och Glibc beh\u00f6vs). Ing\u00e5r g\u00f6r en egen implementation av DHCP-klienten och en upps\u00e4ttning <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/src\/crypto.h\">kryptografiska funktioner<\/a><\/noindex>. Koden till projektet \u00e4r skriven i C och <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/\">levereras<\/a><\/noindex> licensierad under LGPLv2.1.<\/p>\n<p>I <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/git.kernel.org\/pub\/scm\/network\/wireless\/iwd.git\/tree\/ChangeLog\">den nya utg\u00e5van<\/a><\/noindex> st\u00f6d f\u00f6r randomisering och omdefiniering av MAC-adresser har lagts till, liksom m\u00f6jligheten att st\u00e4lla in olika fasta MAC-adresser kopplade till specifika tr\u00e5dl\u00f6sa n\u00e4tverk. Tilldelning av unika MAC-adresser vid anslutning till olika tr\u00e5dl\u00f6sa n\u00e4tverk g\u00f6r det sv\u00e5rare att sp\u00e5ra anv\u00e4ndarens r\u00f6relser mellan WiFi-n\u00e4tverk.
