ReversingLabs publicerade<\/a><\/noindex> resultaten av analysen av anv\u00e4ndning typskvotering<\/a><\/noindex> i RubyGems-f\u00f6rr\u00e5det. Vanligtvis anv\u00e4nds typskvotering f\u00f6r att sprida skadliga paket, som \u00e4r avsedda att lura en ouppm\u00e4rksam utvecklare att g\u00f6ra ett stavfel eller att inte m\u00e4rka skillnaden. Under forskningen identifierades mer \u00e4n 700 paket vars namn liknar popul\u00e4ra paket och skiljer sig \u00e5t med obetydliga detaljer, till exempel genom att byta liknande bokst\u00e4ver eller anv\u00e4nda understreck ist\u00e4llet f\u00f6r bindestreck. <\/p>\n

I mer \u00e4n 400 paket uppt\u00e4cktes komponenter som misst\u00e4nks f\u00f6r att utf\u00f6ra skadliga handlingar. S\u00e4rskilt inuti fanns en fil aaa.png, som inneh\u00f6ll k\u00f6rbar kod i PE-format. Dessa paket var kopplade till tv\u00e5 konton, genom vilka 724 skadliga paket publicerades i RubyGems mellan 16 och 25 februari 2020. paket<\/a><\/noindex>, som sammanlagt laddades ner ungef\u00e4r 95 tusen g\u00e5nger. Bland de identifierade problematiska paketen visade sig det mest popul\u00e4ra vara «atlas-client», som vid f\u00f6rsta \u00f6gonkastet n\u00e4stan \u00e4r om\u00f6jligt att skilja fr\u00e5n det legitima paketet «atlas_client<\/a><\/noindex>«. Det angivna paketet har laddats ner 2100 g\u00e5nger (det normala paketet har laddats ner 6496 g\u00e5nger, vilket inneb\u00e4r att anv\u00e4ndarna gjorde misstag i n\u00e4stan 25% av fallen). \u00d6vriga paket har i genomsnitt laddats ner 100-150 g\u00e5nger och kamouflerades under andra paket med hj\u00e4lp av liknande teknik f\u00f6r att byta ut understreck och bindestreck (t.ex. bland skadliga paket<\/a><\/noindex>: appium-lib, action-mailer_cache_delivery, activemodel_validators, asciidoctor_bibliography, assets-pipeline, apress_validators, ar_octopus-replication-tracking, aliyun-open_search, aliyun-mns, ab_split, apns-polite).<\/p>\n

Malicious packages included a PNG file that contained an executable file for the Windows platform instead of an image. The file was created using the Ocra Ruby2Exe utility and included a self-extracting archive with a Ruby script and Ruby interpreter. When the package was installed, the PNG file was renamed to EXE and executed. During execution, a VBScript file was created and added to the autorun. The specified malicious VBScript continually analyzed the clipboard's contents for information resembling cryptocurrency wallet addresses and, if found, substituted the wallet number, assuming the user would not notice the difference and would transfer funds to the wrong wallet. <\/p>\n

The conducted research showed that it is not difficult to get malicious packages added to one of the most popular repositories, and these packages can remain unnoticed despite a significant number of downloads. It should be noted that the problem inte<\/a><\/noindex> is specific<\/a><\/noindex> f\u00f6r<\/a><\/noindex> to RubyGems and concerns other popular repositories. For example, last year the same researchers har uppt\u00e4ckt<\/a><\/noindex> found a malicious package called bb-builder in the NPM repository, which uses a similar technique of executing files to steal passwords. Before this, the backdoor was ett<\/a><\/noindex> dependent on the NPM package event-stream, and the malicious code was downloaded about 8 million times.
