Seagate releases 18TB HDD
Seagate has launched a new model of the Exos X18 hard drive family. Enterprise-class HDD capacity - 18 TB. You can buy the disc for $561,75.

In addition, the Exos Application Platform (AP) 2U12 and the new controller for AP 4U100 systems are introduced. Capacious storage and computing resources are combined in one platform. AP also offers enterprise-grade embedded software, data protection, and automatic tiering.

The Seagate Exos X18 and updated Exos AP controllers will enable enterprises to effectively address exponential data growth by increasing system capacity and reducing deployment complexity, the manufacturers said. The new hard drive is suitable for cloud and multi-cloud environments, data backup and recovery systems, high-capacity RAID arrays, centralized video surveillance platforms, and so on.

High reliability and resistance to severe workloads is what Seagate focuses on. So, the Exos X18 uses the technology of filling the containment area with helium. The density of helium is 7 times lower than the density of air, which reduces the friction force acting on the magnetic plates inside the hard drives. Also, replacing with helium reduces the force of gas flows, which affects the positioning of heads and disk platters. All together, this allows you to increase the capacity of the HDD and significantly improve the total cost of ownership for data centers and cloud infrastructures.

Seagate Exos X18 uses traditional magnetic recording - CMR. This means that typical tiled recording (SMR) problems are eliminated. Recall that when using CMR and SMR disks together in the same RAID array, most users experienced array degradation, SMR disks falling out, and performance loss during ordinary operations. Moreover, the array destroyed in this way often could not be restored.

The wide weld seal protects against leaks and adds durability to the new HDD. The reliability factor is also affected by Seagate Secure encryption technology, which preserves data even if the drives are lost, stolen or installed in another system.
